"This game's heroine. She runs an atelier on the outskirts of the town of Kirchen Bell. She has a bright and cheerful personality, calming everyone around her, but she's also a slacker when it comes to keeping time, among other things. She loves alchemy, and feels happy when she's able to help others with it. While she's unmatched when it comes to curiosity and effort relating to alchemy, she doesn't do any housework, and specially leaves cleaning up to other people."
— Official description from Atelier Sophie.

Sophie Neuenmuller is the protagonist of Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book and a character in Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey and Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings.

After her parents' death, Sophie lived together with her grandmother who was an alchemist and learned very basic alchemic skills from her. After the death of her grandmother, Sophie makes it her goal to become an alchemist who can be relied upon just as her grandmother was, yet at the start of Atelier Sophie is relatively inexperienced and without any renown as an alchemist.

After creating her first batch of a common medicine in the beginning of the game, Sophie writes down the recipe in an empty reference book left behind by her grandmother. When she returns to the Atelier, the book has come to life and introduces itself as Plachta. Plachta becomes Sophie's mentor, and the player has to discover and write down various ideas the player collects into the book to restore Plachta's lost memories of the secrets of alchemy.

Sophie eventually develops the ability to hear the wishes of alchemy materials.

Role Edit

Atelier SophieEdit

Sophie is the player character in Atelier Sophie, and as such, she cannot be removed from the party. In addition to having an infinite equipment cost, Sophie is the only character able to equip accessories that change field conditions, such as items that influence gathering rates or enemy aggression. Sophie has to fight Luard because he’s using a kind of harmful alchemy called Ablation Alchemy which cause damage to environment.

In the DLC episode, Sophie realizes that she and Plachta don't experience the world the same way because of Plachta's body being that of a doll. Because of this, Sophie reassumes her once failed plans to turn Plachta human. She also decides that she take on the alchemist exam in order to walk in the footsteps of her grandmother. The journey to where the exam is held is very long, but she takes it as an opportunity to collect the materials needed to create a fully human body for Plachta.

Atelier FirisEdit

Sophie is now in the middle of her journey to take the alchemist exam.

She visits Firis Mistlud's hometown Ertona during the journey, blasting the gate open with a bomb. This is how she first meets Firis. Hearing about Firis' special power, Sophie comes to believe that she has a talent for alchemy and becomes Firis' alchemy teacher. They soon part ways once Firis begins her journey, but Sophie leaves her with the Atelier tent.

Firis' first meeting with Sophie and Plachta

She can be faced in battle during the alchemist exam, and later joins the party after the player has passed said exam. Despite the years that has passed, Sophie is still often very childish or irresponsible, something that Plachta scolds her for. Plachta is always keeping Sophie in check and can be stern, but the two are still very close. Sophie describes their relationship as a mix of family, friendship and master and student.

Sophie misses Firis very much during their separation. The reason she joins Firis on her journey to find her path in life is because she wants to be a proper teacher to her student, as well as she simply wants to travel together with Firis. She's also very protective of her status as Firis' teacher.

In Sophie's character events, Firis learns about the voices of materials but doesn't seem to be able to quite grasp this concept. Firis also synthesizes items for Sophie at several times, who is very busy from accepting too many quests. One time when looking for materials together, the ground collapses beneath Firis and Sophie and they are trapped undergound. Sophie gets badly hurt from the fall, but Firis hears the voice of a plant wanting to become medicine for her. After this incident it seems that Firis' special ability has been fully awakened and that she can now hear the voices of any material. Eventually, Sophie tells Firis that they might soon part ways. When Firis refuses to leave Sophie's side, Sophie instead proposes that they travel together forever and work towards her and Plachta's shared dream of using alchemy to make the entire world happy.

In her character ending she sets out on another journey together with Firis and Plachta in order to fulfill their dream. In the true ending she travels aside Firis as well, together with Plachta and Liane.

Atelier Lydie & SuelleEdit

Main article: Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings

Sophie continues to travel with Plachta, having been separated from Firis and Liane. The pair arrives in Merveille as the thunder god Falgior is approaching the city. Liane meets Sophie at the town gates and informs her of the situation. She hurries to Braisewest to find Lydie, Suelle, and Firis making a last stand against the advancing Falgior. She forces him into retreat, buying the group more time. After introductions, she returns to Braisewest to keep Falgior busy while the twins find out how Neige defeated him in the past.

After Falgior is defeated, she joins the party and lives with Firis in her atelier. She acts as a mentor to Lydie and Suelle, identifying the former's ability to hear the voices of materials. She also meets many of her companions from her previous journeys.

Sophie's dream to make Plachta human again becomes reality thanks to materials only found in the mysterious paintings. The two have a brief argument over their futures but later Sophie expresses she wishes to continue to live with Plachta. Her experience with moving Plachta's soul plays a key part in helping Lydie and Suelle make the Pastels of Unity.

In the true ending, A year after the events of the game Sophie, Plachta, Firis, Liane, Lydie, and Suelle leave on a journey to help everyone with alchemy. History records their adventures as bringing about "The Age of Mysterious." A time of miracles and happiness.

The story takes place in an alternate world that relies on a miraculous spring to sustain itself. The King who could control the spring's powers suddenly perished, leaving the world in turmoil. The Queen told her daughter to summon otherworldly heroes to save their land, with Sophie being one of them, but the attempted summoning malfunctioned and left them scattered in different areas. Eventually, other members of this royal family are deemed eligible for the throne, dividing all the heroes into three warring factions; Sophie joins Tamaki's faction, hoping to help the young princess make peace with her brothers. At one point in Tamaki's story, Sophie is surrounded by enemy soldiers while seeking out alchemy ingredients and is rescued by Zhao Yun from the Dynasty Warriors series.
