- "When I find my mom one of these days, I hope I can be as good of an adventurer as her."
- — Totori, Atelier Totori
Totooria "Totori" Helmold is one of only four alchemists in the entire kingdom of Arland. She is the main protagonist of Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland, and a major supporting character in Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland. She also appears in Atelier Rorona Plus. Outside of the Arland series, she appears in Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland and Nelke & the Legendary Alchemists: Ateliers of the New World
Totori is first introduced in Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland as a young, somewhat clumsy and naive aspiring alchemist. She means well, and is very sweet and caring. When she begins her life of adventuring, Totori is timid, shy, and tires easily. She depends on the support of others, but eventually grows to be a strong and dependable adventurer, making many friends along the way and spreading her name throughout Arland.
She grew up in the small fishing village of Alanya with her childhood friend Gino, and is the daughter of a world famous adventurer Gisela. Her mother's mysterious disappearance prompted Totori to begin adventuring, and to gather clues of her mother's whereabouts.
She received her alchemy lessons from the famous alchemist Rorona, and was Rorona's first student. She makes a lot of mistakes when she first begins practicing alchemy (and causes many explosions), but eventually becomes a very distinguished alchemist, even becoming good enough to teach others after years of practice. She uses the assistance of Chim in battle and in alchemy.
Role
Atelier Totori
The player will control Totori throughout the game, as she is the main protagonist. At the start of the game, Totori is only 14, and has just started performing alchemy after meeting Rorona and learning alchemy basics. One day, she goes to gather materials with her childhood friend Gino, leading the two to talk about becoming adventurers. Totori's mother was a famous adventurer who had gone missing years before the story began. Although most people say that her mother is long dead, Totori still believes that her mother is alive, and wants to go out and search for her.
Her sister Ceci is completely against the idea of her becoming an adventurer, but when Totori puts an effort in to show how serious she is, Ceci has no choice but to support Totori's wishes. Once Totori visits Arland to get her adventurer's license, her adventure begins, and she delves into the world of alchemy, adventuring, and exploring on her own personal adventure.
The player's actions will determine the game's endings and events.
Atelier Meruru
After the events of Atelier Totori, Totori has been summoned to the kingdom of Arls to become the kingdom's alchemist in place of Rorona, who was unable to go because of complications. She has retired from adventuring, and now focuses entirely on alchemy. Totori acts as a teacher to the main protagonist, Meruru, the young princess of the kingdom who is excited to become an alchemist.
Totori mentors Meruru in the basics of alchemy, and allows Meruru to use her workshop and container as she ventures through Arls developing her kingdom, mentoring her along he way. Totori is also a recruitable party member and carries the powerful ability to mimic the effect of items in the player's inventory, albeit at a fraction of their original power.
Atelier Rorona Plus
In the post game storyline, Totori together with her student Meruru appears from the future. Totori is also a playable party member, and her Medical Dress costume which also appeared in Atelier Totori Plus and Atelier Meruru Plus is an alternative costume for her.[1]
Rorona faces hard struggles in order for the two to be able to return to their own time. The player needs to craft a specific set of items and also fight a boss to achieve this goal. Totori and Meruru will return home to their own time no matter if the player achieves the goal or not, but if the player succeeds they will be rewarded with a scene featuring a new illustration.
