Viorate "Vio" Platane is the main protagonist in Atelier Viorate: The Alchemist of Gramnad 2. She also appears in Nelke & the Legendary Alchemists: Ateliers of the New World and Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy & the Liberator of Polar Night.

Viorate is an optimistic girl with a bright personality, who grew up and lives in Karotte Village. Her dream is to make Karotte the best city in the whole world. She is skilled with housework, and also dislikes talk about height. She was taught alchemy by Eisel Weimar.

As she loves Karotte Village, she refuses to move to a neighbouring kingdom together with her parents. Instead, she stays behind in the village together with her brother, Bartholomaus Platane, and opens up her own shop. Although that she can seem naive and her dreams unrealistic, Viorate's determination and alchemy skills see her through many challenges.

Notably, Viorate has a passion for carrots, originally planning to build her shop on "carrot cuisine" and refusing to move anywhere where carrots don't grow. She is often seen holding or eating carrots in her expression portraits.

Role[]

Viorate is the protagonist of Atelier Viorate: The Alchemist of Gramnad 2 and the character the player will take the role of. The player can on several occasions choose between alternatives what Viorate will say or do.

Viorate refuses to leave Karotte Village, and opens up her own "alchemy shop" to support herself. She will have to prove to her parents that she can manage her own shop within three years time. Viorate starts out by taking request from bars, but is eventually able to open her shop, Violaden. Viorate will be able to hire her friends and allies to accompany her while gathering ingredients and aid her in battle, or to be a clerk for her store.

The player's achievements and actions will determine and affect the future of Karotte Village and Viorate, and various events of the game.

Battle[]

Viorate will use a staff as weapon in battle. For armor, she can equip clothing, light armor and light shields. She can use items like Eisel, in battle. She can also use skills on her own or together with other characters. Like Judie before her, she can cast Angel Spirit and deal MP damage, making sure the party is always equipped to fight spectral enemies.

Trinity Universe[]

Viorate appears as one of the playable characters in Trinity Universe, but under the name "Violet" for a variety of reasons. To train her alchemy skills and become a great alchemist, she creates plenty of things using materials from all over the Netheruniverse. Her other goal is to cook great food with carrots as the main ingredient. Viorate is still running a shop called Violaden (VioLeGarden in the English translation), but its interior design and location is widely different from the one seen in her game of origin.

She is an old friend of Pamela and a friend to Rizelea, whose investigation team she is also a part of. She is a good friend of Flonne as well, but she makes Flonne nervous. She views Etna as a dangerous girl. She is worried about Lucius, who is like a rebellious brother to her[3].

In Rizelea's story, she joins the team in the second chapter - "My Friend Really Likes Carrots". Rizelea asks her to create a Meteorite, which is a magic stone that enhances ones abilities.

Name Discrepancy[]

Her name is often confused between Viorate and Violet, both of which have completely different pronunciations and thus similarly different katakana spellings in Japanese (Viorate is ヴィオラート, while Violet would be バイオレット). The possibility that "Viorate" is a broken English attempt at Violet is highly unlikely given both their vastly different underlying forms and their realized pronunciations.

In some of the DLC music expansions for the later Atelier games, her name is sometimes spelled "Violet" and sometimes even "Violette", making an attempt at determining her official localized name, if she is intended to currently have one, inconclusive.

Trinity Universe localization editor NickyD explained how the decision to rename her Violet was made in the game in an interview with Siliconera. There, it was explained that Violet had been seen as "more like an actual girl's name" and that it seemed like what the romanization was actually supposed to say. The editor continued by expressing the opinion that Viorate is "ugly" and inappropriate for her role and character.[4]

In Nelke and the Legendary Alchemists she retains the name "Viorate".

Trivia[]

  • By examining the bookshelf in Viorate's room, Viorate comments that she used to read a lot in the past.
  • Violaden is likely a pun on Viorate added together with the German word for shop, "laden". VioLeGarden is likely an attempt on recreating a similar effect adjusted to her localized name, Violet.
  • Similar to Judie's stuffed bear "Kuma-san", Viorate has a a stuffed rabbit called "Alex-kun".
